MOSCOW, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Eight people have been confirmed dead after a coal mine collapse in Russia's Magadan region in the Far East, local authorities said Monday.

Magadan Region Governor Sergey Nosov said that four additional bodies were recovered during debris clearance at the Kadykchansky coal mine, bringing the death toll to eight.

The rescue operation lasted for days, clearing more than 15,500 cubic meters of rock, Nosov said.

The collapse occurred on Thursday, trapping eight workers. Rescuers had recovered four bodies from the rubble by Sunday, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said.
