BERLIN, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The German government said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz must be kept open permanently and reliably, without any restrictions or tolls.
In a statement, the government welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, saying it presents an important opportunity to resume diplomatic negotiations in Islamabad with the aim of achieving peace and preventing further escalation of the war.
The statement said that once hostilities come to a lasting end, Germany, together with its partners, stands ready to contribute to the free navigation of the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and in compliance with national procedures.
It added that the German government will continue to work through diplomatic channels to bring the war in southern Lebanon to a lasting end.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would extend the ceasefire with Iran as the two-week truce was set to expire on Wednesday night. ■
