BERLIN, April 20 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that there is no justifiable basis for a possible U.S. military intervention in Cuba, stressing that the country poses no threat to other countries.

Merz made the remarks during a joint press conference with visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the northern German city of Hanover.

Merz's statements came amid recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump who suggested a potential "takeover" of the Caribbean island nation.

Cuba poses no "discernible" threat to other states, Merz noted, adding that while he advocates for a strong national defense capability, "defense capability does not mean having the right to militarily intervene in other states when the political systems there do not correspond to what others envision."

For his part, Lula said he is against the disregard for the territorial integrity of other nations, and against any country in the world interfering in the political affairs of another.
