BUDAPEST, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Peter Magyar, leader of Hungary's Tisza Party, said Tuesday that securing the release of frozen European Union (EU) funds will be a "top priority" following a phone call with European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen.

In a statement posted on social media, Magyar said both sides agreed that unlocking the funds should be prioritized, stressing that the resources are intended to support Hungarian citizens, institutions and businesses.

The call came after Hungary's parliamentary election on April 12, in which the Tisza Party won a supermajority. Magyar said the incoming government would take the necessary political steps to facilitate access to the funds.

Von der Leyen expressed the Commission's readiness to work closely with the new Hungarian government to deliver results within a tight timeframe, according to the statement.

A substantial share of European Union (EU) cohesion and recovery funds allocated to Hungary has been suspended in recent years over rule-of-law concerns raised by Brussels. The issue has remained central in Hungary's domestic political debate and featured prominently in the recent election campaign.
