MOSCOW, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the latest developments in the Middle East with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, the Kremlin said Sunday.

During a phone call, Pezeshkian assessed the Iran-U.S. talks held in Islamabad on Saturday. He also expressed appreciation for Russia's principled stance to de-escalate regional tensions and for its humanitarian assistance to the Iranian people.

Russia will continue to facilitate a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, Putin said, adding that Russia would maintain active contacts with all regional partners in this regard.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation and confirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties, the Kremlin added.
