MOSCOW, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A Russian military court has sentenced former Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Popov to 19 years in a high-security penal colony on corruption charges, TASS news agency reported Friday.
The 235th Garrison Military Court found Popov guilty of several corruption-related offenses, including accepting an especially large bribe and committing abuse of office, the report said.
The court also imposed a fine of 85 million rubles (about 1.1 million U.S. dollars), banned him from holding government positions for seven years, and stripped him of his military rank.
Popov was arrested in August 2024. He served as deputy minister of emergency situations from 2008 to 2013 before joining the Ministry of Defense in 2013. ■
