LISBON, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Portugal will invest up to 19.3 million euros (22.4 million U.S. dollars) in two strategic supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI) projects over the coming years, according to a cabinet resolution published Monday in the official gazette.

The funding covers two initiatives managed by the Foundation for Science and Technology -- the Deucalion supercomputer in Guimaraes and the MareNostrum 5 AI Factory in Barcelona, one of Europe's most powerful computing infrastructure.

The Deucalion supercomputer will receive up to 3.7 million euros (4.3 million dollars) between 2026 and 2029. The facility, inaugurated in 2023, is designed to strengthen high-performance computing research capacity in Europe, the official gazette said.

Meanwhile, the AI Factory in Barcelona will garner up to 15.6 million euros (18.1 million dollars), to upgrade the MareNostrum 5 into a specialized AI platform, providing cutting-edge computing resources to startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the European scientific community, according to the official gazette.
