COPENHAGEN, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Denmark's King Frederik X on Wednesday asked caretaker Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to lead negotiations on forming a new government, after party representatives in the newly elected parliament submitted their recommendations, the Danish royal house said in a statement.
According to the royal house, representatives from the Social Democrats, the Socialist People's Party, the Red-Green Alliance, the Social Liberal Party, and the Alternative-together holding 84 seats-recommended that Frederiksen be tasked with leading the talks.
The palace said the king subsequently asked Frederiksen to conduct negotiations on forming a government with the participation of the Socialist People's Party and the Social Liberal Party.
Earlier on Wednesday, Frederiksen met with the king, briefed him on the election results and the parliamentary situation, and formally submitted the government's resignation, according to a separate statement from the royal house.
The move followed Tuesday's parliamentary election, which produced no clear majority. Official results showed that Frederiksen's Social Democrats remained the largest party with 38 seats. Neither the left-leaning nor the right-leaning bloc secured the 90 seats needed for a majority, while the centrist Moderates, holding 14 seats, could play a pivotal role in the 179-seat parliament. ■
