FRANKFURT, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Germany's benchmark DAX index plunged by about 4 percent on Tuesday amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The index dropped to 23,603.77 points, 4.2 percent lower than the closing points on the previous trading day and a three-month low during the intraday trading.

The index nosedived shortly after the opening of trading on Tuesday when the Trump administration claimed that attacks on Iran could last weeks or even longer. Prevailing risk-averse sentiment triggered selling in the market, which could still continue for some time, local analysts said.

DAX shares dropped across the board, with the exception of Deutsche Boerse Group and Fresenius Medical Care AG, which advanced 1.8 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively, as of press time. All other DAX constituents declined, with Beiersdorf AG topping the list of fallers, down nearly 1.8 percent. Deutsche Bank AG and Siemens Energy AG both fell more than 5 percent.

The DAX index has been on a three-year winning streak, gaining more than 22 percent in 2025.
