LISBON, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Portugal fell to 8.51 billion euros (10.06 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025, down by 34.9 percent compared to 13.07 billion euros(15.45 billion dollars)in 2024, according to data released on Friday by the Bank of Portugal.

Of the total inflows recorded in 2025, 3.9 billion euros (4.61 billion dollars) went to the real estate sector, and European countries accounted for 5.78 billion euros (6.83 billion dollars) of the total inflows.

According to a report by the official Lusa News Agency, one of the main factors behind the sharp drop in FDI last year was a negative 3.4 billion euros (4.02 billion dollars) in debt instrument investment, partly reflecting internal restructuring operations within corporate groups.

The report pointed out that FDI in 2024 was at a relatively high level, which also contributed to the decline in 2025.
