WARSAW, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 600-megawatt Poland-Sweden power cable outage late Wednesday was caused by a malfunction and has not affected the security of Poland's power system, Polish power grid operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) said Thursday.
"Due to a malfunction, the Poland-Sweden connection has been temporarily shut down," PSE said in a statement. The company added that there were no indications the failure was the result of intentional acts, and repair work is underway.
According to Nord Pool market data, the cable stopped operating shortly before 8 p.m. local time on Wednesday. It is currently expected to resume operation around midnight between Friday and Saturday.
RMF24 reported that the cable runs along the Baltic Sea for more than 200 km, linking a power station near Slupsk in northern Poland with one near Karlshamn in Sweden. It became operational in 2000 and has since been one of the most important energy connections in the region. ■
