WARSAW, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Poland on Friday signed a contract to procure a new anti-drone system, known as SAN, for the Polish Armed Forces, according to the Polish Press Agency.
The signing ceremony took place in the town of Kobylka near Warsaw, where the Armament Agency concluded the agreement with a consortium of domestic and foreign companies in the presence of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Designed primarily to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, the SAN system forms part of Poland's air defense capabilities. The program is expected to be completed within two years and will cost nearly 15 billion zlotys (4.16 billion U.S. dollars).
Once deployed, the system will complement Poland's emerging multi-layered air defense architecture, including medium-, short- and very short-range air defense systems currently under development or deployment, according to local media reports. ■
