THE HAGUE, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML said Wednesday it plans to cut about 1,700 jobs as part of efforts to sharpen its focus on engineering and innovation.

In a public letter to the staff, the company said the reductions will take place in the Technology and IT & Data organizations. Some positions, largely at the management and leadership level, may be eliminated as a result of the changes.

ASML is proposing to shift from a project and matrix organizational structure to one where most of the engineers will be dedicated to a specific product and module, the letter said.

At this stage, ASML expects the proposed changes could lead to a net reduction of around 1,700 positions, primarily in the Netherlands, with some roles affected in the United States, it added.

ASML is headquartered in Veldhoven, in the southern Netherlands.
