RIGA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- An international conference focused on strengthening cooperation and safeguarding the international financial system was held in Riga, Latvia, on Wednesday.
More than 300 officials and experts from dozens of countries gathered in the Latvian capital for the International Conference on Combating Financial Crime.
Martins Kazaks, Governor of Latvia's central bank, Latvijas Banka, said effective measures against financial crime are not only vital for economic development but also for national security.
He stressed that for small, export-oriented economies, maintaining access to payment systems and ensuring the functioning of the financial system is critical.
The event was organized by Latvia's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). ■
