ZAGREB, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The future of Greenland can only be decided by the Greenlandic people in accordance with the right to self-determination granted to them by the laws of the Kingdom of Denmark, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said in a statement on Saturday.

"There is not a single security reason that can override this right of the people of Greenland. Security issues are in no way related to the international legal position of Greenland," the statement said, calling for dialogue and cooperation between Denmark and the United States over Greenland.

An agreement between Denmark and the United States that respects the will of the people of Greenland "is an acceptable solution to this situation," the statement added.

Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. The United States maintains a military base on the island. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "obtain" Greenland and has recently intensified his rhetoric.
