ZAGREB, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- There exists "broad solidarity" of all European Union (EU) members with Denmark on Greenland, as well as in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), except the United States, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said Friday.

Denmark, a NATO member, has consistently stood "shoulder to shoulder" with U.S. soldiers in every NATO operation across the globe, said Plenkovic, cited by the Croatian Radiotelevision.

The Danish political arena is gripped by "great shock and disbelief" after repeated remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about acquiring Greenland, he said, calling for dialogue between Washington and Copenhagen.

"Anything that would be based on any sudden military intervention or U.S. presence in Greenland is, in my deep conviction, very bad," Plenkovic stressed.

In the wake of Trump's remarks, mounting and spreading concerns over security in the Arctic have prompted the EU and NATO allies to ramp up their political and military support for Denmark and its autonomous territory of Greenland, the world's biggest island.

Greenland has a self-governing government within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining authority over its defense and foreign policies. The United States maintains a military base on the island. Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed a strong desire to "obtain" Greenland by any means.
