ST. PETERSBURG, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said Wednesday it had foiled a planned terror attack in St. Petersburg targeting an employee of a defense industry enterprise.

A Russian citizen born in 1966 was detained for preparing the attack under the direction of Ukrainian intelligence agencies, said the FSB's Public Relations Center.

The woman entered Russia through third countries and attempted to retrieve a stash of firearms and an improvised explosive device in Russia's Smolensk Oblast. The weapons were intended for the assassination of an employee at a defense-industrial complex enterprise in Russia's Leningrad Oblast, said the FSB.

During the operation, security officers seized a Makarov pistol, an improvised explosive device made with foreign-produced plastic explosives, as well as communication equipment containing correspondence with coordinators located in Ukraine, it said.
