WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law, will lead a U.S. delegation to a high-level meeting in Paris this week on security guarantees for Ukraine in a potential peace deal, a White House official told media outlets on Monday.
The Coalition of the Willing gathering, set for Tuesday, is expected to bring together leaders from about 30 Western and European nations intent on anchoring security guarantees for Kiev as part of efforts to end the Ukraine crisis, lasting nearly four years.
The meeting comes amid heightened diplomatic activity following recent discussions in the United States and Europe, with security guarantees having emerged as one of the central sticking points in negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pressed for long-term guarantees that could approximate NATO's mutual defense commitments, including possibly extending U.S. security assurances for decades -- far beyond the 15-year framework reportedly offered by Washington.
Last month, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin twice and met with Zelensky at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. However, there is little sign that any breakthrough has emerged since then. ■
