ISTANBUL, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and one other was injured in a traffic accident early Sunday in Türkiye's western province of Canakkale after a driver ignored a police stop warning, local media reported.
The crash occurred on a highway linking the Lapseki district and the Canakkale city center, according to the NTV broadcaster. The driver, whose identity has not yet been determined, allegedly failed to comply with a police order to stop and attempted to flee, it added.
During the ensuing chase, the vehicle entered the wrong direction at a junction and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The force of the collision threw both vehicles off the road.
Multiple medical and fire crews were dispatched to the scene. Emergency teams worked for hours to rescue people trapped inside the wreckage, authorities said.
An investigation into the incident is underway. ■
