BERLIN, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Germany's new left-wing political force, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), adopted a new name and elected a new dual leadership during its federal party congress held in Magdeburg on Saturday and Sunday.
Delegates voted to rename the party "Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason" while keeping the abbreviation "BSW." The name change will officially take effect on Oct. 1, 2026, according to a statement from the party's website.
In addition to the re-branding, the congress elected a new executive duo. Amira Mohamed Ali was confirmed in her office as co-chair and member of the European Parliament Fabio De Masi was elected as the new co-chair.
The party was founded in early 2024 after some political figures including Sahra Wagenknecht broke away from the Left party (Die Linke).
As announced last month, party founder Sahra Wagenknecht will step down as leader of the political party that bears her name.
The BSW narrowly missed the 5-percent threshold to enter the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, during the elections in February. It is currently seeking to re-brand itself and attract more voters. ■
