ROME, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Two people were still missing on Monday after a landslide struck a house overnight in the northern Italian town of Brazzano di Cormons, as persistent heavy rain battered the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and triggered a state of emergency, according to local media.

Firefighters rescued one survivor from the rubble with a leg fracture and transferred the person to hospital, ANSA news agency reported.

Severe weather also caused flooding and widespread damage across the region. In Romans d'Isonzo, residents climbed onto rooftops after a local river overflowed, forcing the evacuation of hundreds.

"The situation is challenging," said regional civil protection chief Riccardo Riccardi, noting that authorities are preparing temporary shelters for about 300 people. "We expected bad weather, but not with such impact."
