TBILISI, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday that it has opened a criminal case against Giorgi Gakharia, an opposition leader and former prime minister who is currently living abroad.
At a press conference, Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze said that the charges filed against Gakharia were over events including a protest crackdown that took place during his service as the minister of internal affairs, a post he held for nearly two years before becoming the country's prime minister in September 2019. Under the accusations, he faces up to 13 years of imprisonment.
Gakharia resigned from the office of prime minister in 2021 and broke away from the ruling Georgia Dream party. He later founded the For Georgia party and is currently its leader. ■
