SOFIA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Six illegal immigrants were killed in Bulgaria after a car carrying them and four others crashed near the Black Sea port city of Burgas, the country's Ministry of Interior said on Friday.

The ministry reported that the accident occurred on Thursday evening near the entrance to Burgas, when the driver attempted to avoid a police spike strip. Traveling at high speed, the vehicle lost control and crashed on the roadside.

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining passengers were taken to Burgas University Hospital for examination. All passengers were undocumented migrants of Afghan origin, and the driver was identified as a Romanian citizen, according to the ministry.

Police said they had tried to stop the car at around 9:20 p.m. local time (1920 GMT) near the seaside resort of Kiten, about 50 km southeast of Burgas, but the driver fled, prompting a pursuit that ended in the crash.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
