Bulgarian parliament elects new speaker

SOFIA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian National Assembly elected a new speaker on Wednesday, a day after the ruling coalition decided to rotate the head of the institution every 10 months.

Raya Nazaryan, a member of the parliamentary group of GERB-UDF, replaced Nataliya Kiselova from BSP-United Left at the position, which is officially called President of the National Assembly.

Nazaryan got the support of 129 members of the parliament from GERB-UDF, BSP-United Left, There Is Such People (ITN), and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms-New Beginning in the 240-seat legislature. As many as 77 from the opposition voted against, and 14 more from the opposition abstained.

Nazaryan, born on Sept. 16, 1985, was the speaker of the previous National Assembly during its short period of existence from June to November 2024.

Kiselova was elected on Dec. 6 last year.
