BUCHAREST, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The leader of Moldova's Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Igor Grosu, was re-elected speaker of the country's parliament on Wednesday.
Grosu's candidacy, proposed by the PAS parliamentary majority, received 55 votes in the 101-seat chamber. His challenger, Alexandr Stoianoglo, nominated by the Alternative, garnered 32 votes. Lawmakers representing Our Party and the Democracy at Home Party declined to participate in the vote.
The Constitutional Court of Moldova last week confirmed the outcome of the Sept. 28 parliamentary elections, according to which five political parties are represented in the new chamber -- the PAS, the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (26 seats), the Alternative Bloc (eight seats), Our Party (six seats) and the Democracy at Home Party (six seats).
In his address to lawmakers after being re-elected, Grosu emphasized that the current parliament must become part of what he called the "European Integration Generation." Grosu was first elected speaker in July 2021.
The parliament of Moldova is elected for a four-year term. The previous parliament was elected in 2021. ■
