LISBON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's parliament on Tuesday approved a revised immigration law that sets new rules for entry, residence, and family reunification of foreign nationals.
The legislation, backed by governing coalition parties and three opposition groups, follows an August Constitutional Court decision requiring changes to the previous framework.
Key provisions include a 15-month duration for initial family reunification permits, proof of 18 months' prior cohabitation before spousal immigration, and a requirement for applicants to demonstrate housing in Portugal. Social welfare benefits will no longer count when assessing household income for residence renewals.
Parliament also adopted provisions facilitating bilateral agreements with third countries to accelerate visa issuance and residence permit procedures, with the goal of simplifying administrative processes for legal migration.
Portugal's foreign-born population has grown steadily, filling jobs in sectors such as construction, hospitality, and healthcare. ■
