MADRID, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Emergency services in Spain's Catalonia region continued searching on Monday for a man whose car was swept away by floodwaters near Barcelona. His son, who was traveling with him, was found dead late Sunday.
According to the Catalan fire brigade, rescue teams worked through the night in Sant Quinti de Mediona, combing roughly six km of river in an effort to locate the missing man.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered his condolences to the victims' family and friends.
Around 90 firefighters are taking part in the search operation, deploying drones, sniffer dogs, an underwater unit, and a helicopter. Local and regional police are also assisting.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, when the father attempted to drive across the river despite warnings. Heavy rain of about 100 liters per square meter had caused water levels to rise rapidly.
Severe floods caused by intense rainfall in October last year claimed 229 lives in the neighboring Valencia region. ■
