ATHENS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Lake Mornos, a key reservoir supplying Greece's capital Athens, has shrunk to its lowest level in 11 years due to reduced rainfall and snowfall, experts said Friday.
Satellite data from the National Observatory of Athens showed the lake's surface area fell to 8.9 square km as of Sept. 9, down from 11.4 square km last year and 15.3 square km in 2023. Water reserves dropped to 193 million cubic meters, compared to 328 million cubic meters in 2024.
Officials said there is no immediate risk of shortages for the Athens metropolitan area, home to nearly half of Greece's population.
The state-run water company EYDAP has activated additional sources, while urging residents to conserve water as climate change intensifies pressure on supplies. ■
