LISBON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's exports to the United States fell to their lowest level in two years in the second quarter, dropping 14 percent year-on-year to 199 million euros (170.08 million U.S. dollars), according to data released Tuesday by Statistics Portugal (INE).
Compared with the previous quarter, exports declined by 93 million euros, or 7.1 percent.
For the first half of the year, exports to the United States decreased by 8.1 percent year-on-year, while imports rose by 14.5 percent. The United States accounted for 6.2 percent of Portugal's total exports and supplied 2.2 percent of its imports during the six-month period.
Despite the downturn, the United States remained Portugal's fourth-largest export destination. However, it slipped to 10th place among the country's main external suppliers compared with the previous semester.
Meanwhile, Portuguese imports from the United States grew by 4.1 percent year-on-year and by 13.1 percent quarter-on-quarter, INE noted. (1 euro = 1.17 U.S. dollar) ■
