ST. PETERSBURG, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The frigate "Admiral Amelko" was launched Thursday at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in Saint Petersburg.
According to Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, the frigate is capable of performing all tasks typical of a multi-purpose warship, in both near and far sea zones.
Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Russian Naval Board Nikolai Patrushev noted that the frigate's launch is a clear demonstration of Russia's growing naval power and the domestic shipbuilding industry's capability to produce modern, high-tech maritime equipment.
"Admiral Amelko" is part of the Project 22350 class of frigates. Russia currently has three Project 22350 frigates in service with the Northern Fleet, and the "Admiral Amelko," the fifth vessel in the series, will later join the Pacific Fleet.
Project 22350 frigates have a displacement of about 5,000 tons, a length of 135 meters, and a beam of 16 meters. The frigates are capable of engaging enemy aircraft carrier groups and other surface targets, providing air defense for naval formations, supporting amphibious operations, striking land and sea targets, and conducting anti-submarine warfare. ■
