RIGA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed at a farm with 4,900 pigs in Talsi municipality, western Latvia, the national food and veterinary authority reported Tuesday.

The farm is owned by Danish company Nygaard International. All the pigs will be culled to contain the disease. A quarantine zone has been set up, restricting pig and pig product movements, with health and biosafety checks ordered for nearby farms.

This is the fourth pig farm hit by ASF in Latvia this year. The three earlier outbreaks were on smaller holdings: 36 pigs in Tukums municipality in May, six pigs in Jelgava municipality in July, and 55 in Bauska municipality later that month.

ASF has been present in Latvia since June 2014, spreading mainly among wild boars.
