BRUSSELS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The European Parliament's international trade committee is ready to engage with U.S. leaders but will not yield on key issues, its chairman said on social media on Friday, as U.S. President Donald Trump once again threatened a sharp escalation in tariffs.

"If U.S. President is looking for cooperation and negotiation, he will always find an open door with the European Union (EU). If he is looking for abdication, then he is knocking on the wrong door," Bernd Lange posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Lange said committee members will travel to Washington next week to "demystify some of the misperceptions" surrounding EU trade policy. He rejected Trump's notion that the EU was created to "take advantage of the United States" on trade.

Trump on Friday renewed his threat to impose a 50-percent tariff on EU goods from June 1.
