WARSAW, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A ruling party candidate and an independent will head to a runoff of the presidential election, Poland's National Electoral Commission (PKW) said Monday.
Warsaw Mayor and ruling Civic Coalition (KO) candidate, Rafal Trzaskowski, secured 31.36 percent of the vote, while Karol Nawrocki, an independent backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, received 29.54 percent, according to the final results of the first round released by the PKW on Monday morning.
The margin between the two candidates exceeded 350,000 votes, according to the PKW.
Under local election law, if no candidate receives more than half of the votes this time, a runoff will be held between the top two contenders.
According to PKW data, there are 29,252,340 eligible voters, and turnout in the first round of the presidential election reached 67.31 percent -- up from 64.51 percent in the first round of the 2020 presidential election. ■
