WARSAW, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Poland summoned Hungary's ambassador to Warsaw on Friday over former Polish deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski's political asylum granted by Budapest, and decided to recall its ambassador to Hungary.
Polish prosecutors accused Romanowski of 11 charges including involvement in an organized crime group, using crime as a source of income, and abusing his power while serving as deputy minister of justice.
A court in Warsaw issued a European Arrest Warrant for Romanowski on Thursday and the Hungarian government granted Romanowski political asylum the same day.
Gergely Gulyas, Hungarian minister in charge of the Prime Minister's Office, told local media that Hungary's decision was based on concerns about the lack of a fair trial and political influence in Poland.
The Polish foreign ministry said in a statement that it "considers the decision of Hungary to grant political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, who is wanted under the European Arrest Warrant, to be an act hostile towards Poland and contrary to the elementary principles binding on the member states of the European Union."
It warned that Poland will request the European Commission to initiate proceedings against Hungary under Article 259 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union "if Hungary fails to fulfill its European obligations." ■
