BUCHAREST, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Moldova's parliament voted on Friday to impose a national state of emergency for 60 days starting Dec. 16 due to an expected cut-off of Russian gas supplies from Jan. 1, 2025.
The decision, based on a report from the Commission for Emergency Situations (CSE), addresses critical energy shortages threatening national security and citizens' well-being.
According to local media, to mitigate the crisis, Moldova plans to rely on electricity imports from Romania, although import capacity is limited to 315 megawatts. Compounding the issue, key infrastructure like the Isaccea-Vulcanesti power line traverses Ukraine, making it vulnerable to potential attacks.
The emergency status grants the CSE authority to implement immediate measures, including special procurement mechanisms for electricity and gas, resource allocation, and operational directives for energy providers. ■
