LONDON, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris announced on Friday that Ireland will hold its general election on Nov. 29.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins has formally dissolved the current Dail, the lower house of the Irish parliament, to mark the start of the general election campaign.

Harris, leader of the Fine Gael party, heads a coalition government in Dublin alongside Fianna Fail and the Green Party.

Sinn Fein, the main opposition party, achieved a historic result in the 2020 election, securing 37 parliamentary seats.

In the upcoming election, a total of 174 Teachtai Dala (TDs), or members of parliament, will be elected, with 88 TDs needed to form a majority government.
