OSLO, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Norway has announced extension of its internal border controls until Nov. 11 in response to an increased terrorist threat.
The decision was confirmed by the Justice Minister Emilie Mehl. "I have now decided to extend border controls until 11 November 2024. This gives the police greater opportunity to obtain information about travelers and to carry out more checks at the border," she said in a press release on Wednesday.
The Norwegian Police Security Service has raised the terror threat level from "Moderate" (level 3) to "High" (level 4) on Oct. 8, amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East
The National Police Commissioner has authorized the arming of Norwegian police and internal border checks were introduced.
"The backdrop to my decision is the continuing heightened terrorist threat, seen in the light of events in Stockholm and Copenhagen. In addition, there is a possible link between foreign powers and the recruitment of criminal networks to carry out terrorist acts in Europe," Mehl added. ■
