KIEV, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian military forces are creating a "buffer zone" in Russia's western Kursk region, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said on Wednesday.
"Our military formed a 'buffer (sanitary) zone' on the territory of the Kursk region for self-defense purposes," Lubinets said on Telegram after taking part in a meeting on the situation in the Kursk region.
The meeting, headed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, discussed the possible involvement of international organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations, in humanitarian measures in the area.
There is a need to ensure supplies of food, medicines and other key goods to civilians living in the "buffer zone," Lubinets said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, who also took part in the meeting, said that Kiev is planning to establish humanitarian routes for civilians who want to leave the conflict-hit areas either to Russia or Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Zelensky said that Ukraine had taken control of over 74 settlements in the Kursk region. ■
