BRUSSELS, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Klaus Schormann, president of modern pentathlon's international governing body UIPM, said that the modern pentathlon is "in a special transition time," with significant changes expected for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Schormann made the remarks at an online press conference on Tuesday to provide an update on preparations for both Paris 2024 and the new-look Modern Pentathlon for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Currently, the modern pentathlon is made up of four events combining five sports, which include riding, fencing, swimming, running, and shooting.

The upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games will feature a revised format. Traditionally, the five disciplines were spread over at least four days. However, for Paris 2024, the semifinals and finals will be condensed into a 90-minute event, reordering the disciplines and hosting them in a single venue.

Following the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the equestrian component will be replaced by obstacle racing. This major change comes after an incident at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, where a German coach struck a horse that refused to jump a fence, sparking widespread criticism.

Schormann highlighted France's historical connection to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games and the modern pentathlon, who was born in Paris at the press conference. "We are coming to Paris with our historical (past)," he noted.

Praising the excellent facilities, Schormann described the Paris Games as a "historical moment." He emphasized that the level of competition among athletes is extremely high, with minimal room for errors.
