VILNIUS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The company Neste Lietuva in Lithuania started a "Together for a cleaner Baltic" campaign this summer to clean the sunken fishing nets in the Baltic Sea, the news website 15min reported on Monday.
Neste Lietuva is a Finnish energy company. It's their second year in a row initiating this campaign to draw public attention to the pollution in the Baltic Sea and contribute to a better ocean environment.
Last year, the campaign collected 10,246 euros (10,963 U.S. dollars) to clean the Baltic coast. This year, Neste allocated 0.10 euros (0.107 dollars) from each customer's payment to cooperate with the "Lithuanian Diving Academy" in cleaning the sunken fishing nets in the Baltic Sea, the report said.
Julija Matisone, head of Neste Lietuva, commented in a news release that pollution of the Baltic Sea is a problem that affects all, and people must work together to solve it. The results of the campaign show that the local residents also care about a cleaner Baltic. The contribution can be significant for future generations.
According to the report, the Baltic Sea is still at the top of the list of the most polluted seas, and the largest amount of pollutants in the sea consists of microplastic particles smaller than 5 mm and invisible to the naked eye. ■
