ATHENS, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- An ancient Greek marble statue of a boy and fragments of similar statues were unearthed this summer on a small Aegean Sea island, Greece's Ministry of Culture said here on Monday.

The statue and the fragments dating back to the 5th century BC were discovered during archaeological excavations on Despotiko.

The headless statue of the nude male youth made of fine marble from the nearby island of Paros came to light in good condition, the ministry said.

Fragments from torsos, heads and other parts of marble statues were found used as building material for walls at the site.

Excavations there started in 2001 and archaeologists have so far discovered remains of several buildings surrounding a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, god of light in Greek mythology.
