Road accident in Slovakia leaves 1 dead, scores more injured

BRATISLAVA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- A road traffic accident on a highway connecting Slovakia and the Czech Republic caused one death and left 59 people injured on Monday.

The accident happened when a bus carrying Hungarian tourists slammed into the back of a cargo lorry. Nine of the injured people are in a critical condition, according to Jana Simunkova, spokesperson for the Regional Police Headquarters in Bratislava.

Slovakia's President Zuzana Caputova has sent a letter of condolence to her Hungarian counterpart Katalin Novak, pledging to take the utmost care of those affected by the accident.

A makeshift field hospital was erected at the site, and three helicopters airlifted passengers to the nearest hospitals.

According to Simunkova, neither of the drivers involved was under the influence of alcohol.
