ST. PETERSBURG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Three Karakurt-class corvettes will join Russia's Black Sea Fleet by the end of this year, Russian media reported Friday.

The Black Sea Fleet expects to receive three Karakurt-class corvettes of Project 22800 this year, Vice Admiral Viktor Sokolov, the fleet commander, was quoted by the official newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry "Krasnaya Zvezda" as saying.

In addition, the fleet will be replenished with a new patrol ship, he said.

The Karakurt-class corvettes of Project 22800 are designed to perform short-range tasks. They can be equipped with high-precision missiles and advanced artillery systems, including Kalibr missile systems, according to Russian media.

The Karakurt-class corvette was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau and has been built for the Russian Navy since 2015.
