HELSINKI, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The production of fossil-free electricity reached record levels in Finland in 2022, covering 75 percent of the country's overall electricity consumption, Statistics Finland said in a press release on Monday.

The volume of wind power produced in the country surged by 41 percent in 2022, covering a record 14.1 percent of overall electricity consumption.

Nuclear power accounted for the largest share of overall consumption at 29.6 percent, followed by hydropower (16.3 percent) and wind power (14.1 percent).

Electricity production from wood fuels decreased from the previous year but it still covered 13.5 percent of overall consumption.

Finland's net electricity imports, which covered 15 percent of total consumption, decreased by 30 percent year-on-year due primarily to the radical -- 60 percent -- drop in Russian electricity imports.

As a result of the increased electricity prices and the national energy saving campaign, total energy consumption decreased by 6 percent year-on-year in 2022, according to the statistical agency.
