SARAJEVO, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Several flights to and from Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) Sarajevo International Airport were canceled on Monday due to heavy snowfall that started early on Sunday.

Airport officials said most flights are still operating on schedule and safety crews are working to ensure that the runways are ploughed and cleared for takeoff and landing. However, certain airlines still chose to cancel their flights.

Major roads in and around the capital Sarajevo are open to traffic but navigating the snow-covered sidewalks is dangerous.

Sarajevo is known for its narrow thoroughfares, where the parked cars are now blocking snow plows and emergency vehicles.

Schools are closed in Gorazde, some 70 km east of the capital, which has been hit by power outages that also affected water supply.

Elsewhere in the country, such as in Grahovo municipality 260 km west of the capital, schools switched to online learning.

The road linking Drvar and Glamoc in the eastern part of the country is impassable because of snow cover up to two meters thick in some places, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Automobile Club (BIHAMK) said.

The municipalities of Krupa and Novi Grad in the north-western part of the country are also without power supply. Schools are closed there as well.

According to the Federal Hydro-Meteorological Institute, further intense snowfall is expected in some areas of the country this week.  Enditem
