LONDON, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The number of people killed in an apartment building explosion and fire this past weekend on the British Channel Island of Jersey has risen to seven, local police said on Tuesday.
Early on Saturday, a blast leveled a three-story block of flats located near the harbor in the island's capital St Helier.
"The number of islanders confirmed to have been killed in the blast is now seven," Robin Smith, chief officer of Jersey police, said in a statement.
"There are still residents that remain unaccounted for. We estimate this number to be two," he added.
The cause of the blast is still under investigation, but Smith said on Sunday that a gas leak "seems likely." ■
