LJUBLJANA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia's largest zoo, the Ljubljana Zoo, will celebrate the International Red Panda Day, which will take place on Saturday, by presenting the first red panda born at the zoo to the public for the first time.

"The birth of the red panda in June was a surprise and a challenge to the zoo staff," the zoo said in a statement on its website Wednesday.

Due to the sensitivity of red pandas, the zoo had to provide mist cooling for the panda family during the hot summer months and put up an additional fence to secure their intimacy.

"The sensitivity of the species and the inexperience of the couple (parents) is also the reason that a veterinarian has not yet visited them so the sex of the baby is as yet unknown," the zoo said, adding the baby panda has only recently started to peek out of the den.

The zoo named the baby Bambu, saying that this name would suit a female and a male red panda and that it refers to bamboo -- red panda's favorite food.

Red panda is an endangered small mammal that is native to southwestern China and eastern Himalayas.
