PARIS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Victims of thefts and assaults on France's public transport increased by 4 percent in 2021 over the previous year, the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI) announced in a press release on Thursday.

Last year, 122,710 people were victims of thefts and violence on France's public transport, according to figures registered by police and gendarmerie services.

Despite a year-on-year increase, the figure was still lower than that before the COVID-19 pandemic, said the SSMSI.

Of all victims of crimes on public transport in 2021, some 79 percent suffered non-violent thefts, the statistical service said.

Meanwhile, 17 percent of all non-violent rapes reported in France last year happened on public transport, it added.

The situation was slightly better in the Ile-de-France region where Paris is situated, where an average 23 people became victims of thefts and violence out of every million journeys made in 2021, compared to 29 ones in 2020, according to the SSMSI.
