NICOSIA, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Limassol wine festival will return this month after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the city's mayor Nicos Nicolaides said on Monday.

"The wine festival is the biggest, most important folk celebration in the country," Nicolaides said, adding that he hoped the event would promote Cyprus' wine villages, as well as tourism on the island.

Visitors to the week-long wine festival (from Sept. 17 to 25) include Limassol residents, but also tens of thousands of people from all over Cyprus, as well as tourists. Unlimited free wine is offered to visitors by the eastern Mediterranean's biggest wine makers.

The wine festival has been held every year since 1961, except 2020 and 2021.
