TBILISI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Georgia on Thursday celebrated its Independence Day and the 104th anniversary of the establishment of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia in 1918.

Georgian president, prime minister and government officials participated in the grand ceremony at the Freedom Square in Tbilisi to mark the day.

"We are faced with a time of new opportunities and new challenges, it requires from us, with caution, certain answers, readiness, foresight, vision of the future and courage," said President Salome Zourabichvili in her address at the ceremony, while urging the society to unite as one to face up to the challenges.

A military parade and new recruits' oath-taking activity were also held during the ceremony.

The Independence Day celebration was also held in other major cities of the country, which featured a wide range of cultural, educational and entertainment activities.

Georgia commemorates May 26 of 1918 as its national Independence Day when the country adopted the Act of Independence and established the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.
